Lady Vikings Fall in Season Home Opener to Alaska-Fairbanks

Sept. 1, 2017

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University volleyball team dropped its season opener at home in R. L. Vaughan Center, (3-0) 6-25; 10-25; 14-24 to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Friday evening.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings stand at 0-1; while Alaska-Fairbanks improves to 1-0 on the season.

ECSU fell behind 7-0 before earning its first point on the season off a service error from the Nanooks’ Gabby Lerma. The Lady Vikings added five more points during the set but it wasn’t enough as UAF took the first set, 6-25.

Although being overwhelmed by a more physical opponent, Elizabeth City State stepped it up in the second set, collecting 10 points from six different Lady Vikings. In the third and final set, ECSU put up an early fight, tying the set at 4-all before the Nanooks slowly crept away and took the match, 3-0.

Freshman outside hitter Jahera Dangerfield led the Lady Vikings with four kills; while seniors Zelvonia Swain and Auzheure’ Jackson added three during the match. Senior Lauran Burgess led ECSU in assists with five.

The Lady Vikings will host Alaska-Fairbanks, the University of Mount Olive, Concord University, and Slippery Rock tomorrow and Sunday at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex in Virginia Beach, Va. beginning at 9 a.m.
