ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Elizabeth City State University's 2008-09 athletic season begins officially this weekend when the Mighty Viking football team hosts Chowan University at Roebuck Stadium on Saturday night.

However unofficially it will be ladies first as the ECSU volleyball team will host a pre-season scrimmage against Barton College on Tuesday night at the RL Vaughan Center. The Lady Vikings, coming of the most successful finish in school history at 21-11 overall, are the defending CIAA Eastern Division champions. They will return nine members from last year's team which reached the conference semi-finals for the first time in school history. Leading the way will be All-CIAA Pre-Season selections Eva Johnson, Ashley Tarasoff and Xie'Ara Maybank-Smallings. The Lady Vikings and Lady Bulldogs will meet for their scrimmage tomorrow at 6:00pm in the RL Vaughan Center. Admission is free.

ECSU will open up their season on the road in a tournament hosted by Limestone College August 29-30 in Gaffney, SC. They will first face Adelphi University Friday afternoon at 3:00pm.

The Vikings will kick off their 2008 football campaign Saturday night at 7:00pm against Chowan University at Roebuck Stadium. This will be the first time that the Vikings and Hawks will meet on the gridiron. With this season being Chowan's first year as a CIAA member institution, ECSU represents their first ever conference opponent in football. Although they are located just a short distance away, ECSU and Chowan will be cross division rivals as the Vikings represent the CIAA Eastern Division while the Hawks are a member of the CIAA West. The cost of admission is $10.00 for the general public, S5.00 for ECSU faculty and staff with ID and is free to ECSU students with their ID.
