MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University volleyball team suffered a 3-2 setback at the hands of the visiting Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings on Thursday evening. The Hawks dropped the first two sets to the Lady Vikings and battled back to force a deciding fifth set but Elizabeth City State came out on top of the CIAA Northern Division match-up.

Rosetta Becerra tallied a staggering 24 kills and 24 digs in the win for the Lady Vikings. Krystal Sawyer notched 14 assists. Suraya Chase led the effort for Chowan with 12 kills and Kelsey Schlake totaled 34 assists.

The Lady Vikings quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the first set. The Hawks answered back with a 6-0 run to pull away 7-5. Elizabeth City State took advantage of several Hawk errors to grab a 15-12 lead before closing out the set with a 25-20 victory. Both teams fought to maintain control throughout the second set. The Lady Vikings overcame seven ties in the set before sealing the 25-19 win in set two with a kill by Becerra.

The Hawks refused to go down without a fight and used a 6-0 run behind Ehrich's serves to contribute to a 14-7 advantage in the third set. Chowan held on to the momentum and took advantage of Lady Viking miscues to take a 25-16 win in set three. The fourth set proved to be a competitive battle between the Northern Division rivals. With the match on the line and the score tied 20-20, a kill by Brianna Smith for the Hawks sparked a 5-0 run allowing the Hawks to take the 25-20 set win and force a fifth set.

Elizabeth City took the match into their own hands in the fifth set. The Lady Vikings jumped to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, closing out the match with a 15-6 victory. Elizabeth City State improves to 7-6 overall and 7-4 in the league after Thursday's win.
