ECSU Women’s Tennis Secure Spot in 2017 CIAA Tourney; First Time Since 2009

April 15, 2017

BOWIE, Md. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s tennis team defeated Bowie State 5-2, securing a spot to compete in the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Tournament; the first since 2009 when the Lady Vikings earned a berth into the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

“You can look at the box score, and see that the majority of the points came from 3-5 singles,” said head coach Richard Harfst. “Every single player was focused on something that they improved during the matches. Tatiana Cuffie is a per-fect example.”

Cuffie fell to Kionza Allen, 8-0 and 8-2 in their singles competition.

“She got shut out in the first singles match,” said Harfst. “She knew her teammates had secured the first victory without her court, but she still dug in and took two games off the second set, and she pushed several more to deuce. That's what this team is all about.”

Brianna Henderson defeated Kamari Eason to take the first singles match of the day for the Lady Vikings, 8-3; 8-3; while Danielle Hill blanked BSU’s Jocelyn Williams, 8-0 in both sets. Taykeyra Thomas swept Lanisha Cooper to seal the victory for ECSU.

“Ward was making her opponent play one more ball,” stated Harfst. “Bri sprained her ankle, but continued pushing on; while Thomas captured her first two career victories. Danielle held it steady.”

“It feels amazing to be headed to the CIAA Tournament at the end of the season, but right now we need to rest up and get healthy.”
