ECSU Women Tennis Drops Three at CIAA Round-up

March 27, 2017

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s tennis team had a rough weekend at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association round-up Mar. 25 and 26th in Charlotte at Johnson C. Smith University.

"We started out with a real opportunity to get another W this season with our match up against Livingstone,” said ECSU’s head coach Richard Harfst. “The way our squads matched up, the contest could have went either way on any given day, but I felt that being on the road got to us a little bit. It felt like we were on our heels from the jump."

Danielle Hill was able to battle to another three-set victory on singles court No. 5 against LC. The other bright spot was Brianna Henderson bringing home singles court 4. (Both players now have 3 career match wins)

"Bri, was down in the first set and her opponent actually served for the set at 5-4, but she's a competitor,” stated Harfst. “She dug in, turned the set around, took it 7-5 and never looked back."

Henderson ran away with the second set 6-0, but LC secured the victory, 5-4.

"Anytime an opponent forfeits two courts because they don't have enough players, and it's an even match-up, it hurts to lose," said Harfst.

Due to the threat of inclement weather on match day 2, the Lady Vikings completed all three contests on Saturday. Going 0-3 on the weekend ECSU lost to Livingstone 5-4, Winston-Salem State University 9-0, and Johnson C. Smith University 9-0.

"Winston-Salem and Johnson C. Smith are much stronger clubs than us right now. But, we are building, and these girls on my squad are the ones making it happen. We might have gone 0-3 this weekend, but I think we are doing the right things, and I'll stick with these girls eight days a week."
