Lady Vikings Tennis Capture First Victory in Over Three Years

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings captured its first team victory in over three years, knocking-off Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos Saturday afternoon at the ECSU Tennis Complex.

It was a huge 5-4 team win for the Vikings that went down to a ten point tie-breaker on the No. 3 singles court. Junior captain Tatiana Cuffie looked calm and collected as she stepped to the line for match point and sealed the “W”.

“She seemed so cool and calm; it kept me cool,” said head coach Richard Harfst. “There is no doubt that this is a huge victory for us and every single member on this team made that happen!”

The first two points for ECSU came from the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts. Brianna Henderson and Kayla Ward dis-played excellent team work in their first time paired together.

“Bri really stepped up and kept them in a lot of points,” said coach Harfst. “She led the way at the net, putting away her volleys. Ward made several clutch winners, and they were able to get the point.”

On singles court No. 6, Rodnika Jones did not hesitate to get her singles debut started with a victory, although being plagued with injury all season long. “I knew she had a little wrist injury earlier in the season and with the cold weather I could see she was in a lot of pain, but she never complained.”

Henderson also brought home the No. 4 singles, taking both sets, 6-4. “She got behind early in the first set, and then she gathered her feet and played more aggressive; particularly in the final set, to grasp the win.”

“Also, Jocelyn Lewis plays her heart out on court No. 1,” said Harfst. “Week in and week out, she gives us her best and we as a team understands that this team is impossible without her being out there grinding it out for us.”
