Lady Vikings Tennis Falls to Virginia Union, 8-1

March 8, 2017

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s tennis team fell 8-1 in its season and home opener to Virginia Union University on Tuesday, March 7 at the ECSU Tennis Complex.

In doubles, ECSU came out with aggression and a will to win, although being overpowered and shutout by Union’s No. 1 Sabrina Conner and No. 2 Logan Reid. The match-up between the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles team was much more competitive, but VUU was able to exhaust both ECSU’s pairs.

In singles on court three, Kayla Ward made her freshman debut taking 3-love lead before her more experienced opponent took control and ran away with the 6-4; 6-2 victory. The No. 4 and No. 6 single match-ups were strong contests. The No. 5 singles court turned into a “Battle of Heart” as both ladies left everything on the court. Senior Danielle Hill gutted out a 7-6; 5-7; 10-4 tie-break moral victory, saving ECSU from a shutout after a three hour thriller.

“Although VUU took the match 8-1, ECSU stood proud,” said head coach Richard Hafst. They competed for every point and showed vast improvement with four returning players and a growing program. The match will help the ladies take confidence into this week-end’s round-up; knowing that they have doubled the number of games won off VUU from last season.”
