Lady Vikings Softball Drops Double-Header to Virginia Union

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University softball team fell to Virginia Union University 16-0; 16-1 in a double-header matchup Saturday afternoon at the ECSU softball field.

With the losses, the Lady Vikings falls to 1-20 on the season and 0-6 in conference action; while VUU improves to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

ECSU came out in the first inning of the first contest retiring the side, but everything started falling apart in the second inning when the Lady Panthers scored seven of its 16 runs. The Lady Vikings threatened VUU with a runner on second base in the fourth after a Casey Cartwright double to center field, but they couldn’t capitalize.

In the second contest of the day, the Lady Panthers jumped out to another big lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Lady Vikings threatened VUU several times with runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, and seventh innings but only capitalized once on a single down the right field line off the bat of Lashika Basnight to give ECSU its first and only run of the series.

Elizabeth City State will host its softball senior day tomorrow, Sunday, April 9 at the ECSU softball field beginning at 12:20 p.m. Seniors being honored are: Khadijah Rogers, Kelsey White, Kayley Surrento, and Casey Cartwright. The Lady Vikings will host Virginia State University for the contest.
