ECSU Softball Is Set to Compete in 2017 Shaw Softball Challenge

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University softball team is set to compete in the 2017 Shaw Softball Challenge, hosted by Shaw University Friday, Mar. 3 thru Sunday, Mar. 5 at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. ECSU’s first game is slated for 10 a.m. Friday morning.

The 20-team challenge includes teams from seven different conferences facing off against each other all weekend long on four fields for bragging rights. Contests will also be played at Middle Creek School Park in Apex, N.C. Featured teams are: Mansfield College; Clarion; your Lady Vikings; Queens University of Charlotte; Barton College; Fairmont State University; Virginia State University; Lincoln University; Bowie State University; Bluefield State College; Chowan University; Wayne State University; Lock Haven University; West Virginia State University; Lenior-Rhyne University; the University of Charleston; Shippensburg University; Shepherd University; Virginia Union University, and host team Shaw.

ECSU enters the weekend (0-6) after dropping a double-header to Salem International University, Sunday in its home opener. Senior hurler Kelsey White led the team offensively, going 4-for-6 on the day, with seven assists, seven put-outs, and a base on balls, but captured the loss in game one.

Senior Kayley Surrento and freshman Alyssa Griffin both went 4-for-7 batting in the effort, respectively. White is leading the team with a .429 batting average, which includes six hits, six total bases and two runs. She holds a slugging percentage of .429 and an on base percentage of .467. Griffin is second on the team with a .400 batting average; including six hits in 15 plate appearances, eight total bases, three runs batted in, two runs, and two doubles. She owns a .533 slugging percentage and a .400 on base percentage.

Collectively, the team is batting a .200, has a slugging percentage of .217; and an on base percentage of .238; while its opponents are hitting .563, holds a slugging percentage of .819, and an on base percentage of .621.

The ECSU pitching staff collectively, owns a 19.86 earned run average and has given up 121 hits in 29 innings played.
