ECSU Softball Drops Double-Header to Salem International

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Elizabeth City State University softball team dropped a double-header to Salem International University Sunday afternoon at the ECSU Softball Field. With the losses, ECSU fell to 0-6 on the season; while SIU improved to 4-2.

Game 1:

The Lady Vikings held Salem International in the top of the first inning after striking out the lead-off batter and grounding out the next two. A lead-off single up the middle off the bat of Kayley Surrento got the bottom half of the inning started for ECSU. Two errors from SIU scored Surrento from first, giving Elizabeth City State its first run of the ballgame, 1-0. Alyssa Griffin added a hit in the inning.

ECSU fought through another inning of flawless ball in the top of the second and third innings. SIU recorded five hits and a run through five, but in the bottom half of the fifth, Surrento ignited another productive inning for the Lady Vikings with a single to center field. Kelsey White singled to center, Griffin doubled to left field, scoring both Surrento and White, and a throwing error scored Griffin, making it a 4-1 contest.

Salem International came out in the sixth and recorded a run off two hits, and added eight runs in the seventh, coming back from behind to steal the 10-4 contest from ECSU.

Game 2:

SIU jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first inning, overwhelming the Lady Vikings with nine hits and two errors. ECSU made an effort to come back, recording four runs of its own. A single to second base off the bat of Surrento ignited Elizabeth City State.

Casey Cartwright added an infield single to short stop, advancing Surrento to second. White walked to load the bases. Two throwing errors, scored Surrento and Cartwright, placing Griffin on base. A wild pitch and a single to right off the bat of Lashika Basnight, scored White and Griffin, making it a 12-4 contest.

Salem International tallied four more runs in the second, 10 more in the third, and one more in the fourth, taking the 27-4 ballgame.

Griffin took the loss in game two; while White captured the loss in game one. On the day, Surrento went 4-for-7, White went 4-for-6, and Griffin went 4-for-7 to lead the Lady Vikings.
