Softball Opens 2017 Season on the Road in Pembroke

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University softball team opens its 2017 season on the road in Pembroke, N.C. against Young Harris College Saturday and face host team UNC-Pembroke Sunday.

First pitch for Saturday’s double-header is slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; while Sunday’s contests begin at noon and 2 p.m. All games can be followed via live stats here: and can be seen here: .

The Lady Vikings ended last season with a 5-22 overall record and 3-11 in conference play, which placed them last in the conference. ECSU held a batting average of .269 in 27 games played.

The team had 182 hits, 78 runs, 65 runs batted in, 23 doubles, and four triples. The Vikings earned a .315 slugging percentage, a .314 on base percentage, a .904 fielding percentage, and was 25-of-25 stealing bases.

Players returning from a season ago are: Casey Cartwright (.322 batting average); Kelsey White (.330 batting average); Kayley Surrento (.244 batting average); and Lashika Basnight (.100 batting average).

The Mountain Lions enter Saturday’s contest with an 8-0 record, after defeating North Greenville College in a double-header on E. D. Rivers Field last weekend. Jill Torres spearheads Young Harris with a .476 batting average in 21 at bats this season. She has 10 hits, four runs, four RBI, a double, and a homerun with a .667 slugging percentage.

The Braves are 7-4 on the season, after falling to Limestone 3-4 and 4-10 in Gaffney, S.C. last Sunday afternoon. Pembroke is paced by Abbey Walters with a .545 batting average. She has recorded 18 hits, 17 RBI, 16 runs, six doubles, and five home runs already on the season. She holds a 1.182 slugging percentage and a .590 on base percentage. The team is batting .357 in eleven games.
