Final Stats

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Chowan University remained perfect in CIAA for the 2016 season after capturing a doubleheader sweep over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the ECSU softball field.

The Hawks improve to 6-0 in the CIAA and 19-12 overall with their 8-0 and 15-4 Northern Division triumphs over ECSU.

The Hawks scored three runs in the first, one in the fourth and added four in their final at bat to earn an 8-0 win in a shortened 5 inning game one. The Lady Vikings were held to just two hits; one by Kelsey White in the bottom of the second while the other came courtesy of Kayley Surrento in ECSU’s half of the third. The Hawks’ Kayla Robins earned her 11 victory of the season as a starter while Tina White scored two runs and tallied three hits, all doubles, in the shutout.

In the nightcap, the Lady Vikings rallied from a 9-0 deficit before falling 15-4 in five innings. After the Hawks sized the 9-0 advantage with a five run burst in the fourth, the Lady Vikings found their offense with 6 hits in their half of the inning. ECSU got back to back RBI singles to make the score 9-2 with no outs. A CU pitching change didn’t perturb the Lady Vikings momentum as Kelsey White drove in Rachel Gilliken for another run. Emmesha White finished the inning with a two out, RBI single and ECSU trailed 9-4 heading to the top of the fifth.

The Hawks countered the ECSU rally with a 6 run, 6 hit spurt in the top of the fifth which included a grand slam by Tori Cragan followed by a solo shot courtesy of Haley Cox. Chowan had a total of four home runs in game two.

ECSU (3-14, CIAA 2-6) will return to action on Sunday at 1pm for a non-conference doubleheader against Barton College.
