ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State Lady Viking softball team split their season opening double header with Saint Paul's College dropping game one 3-2 before rallying to capture game two 10-9.

In game one ECSU trailed by one with runners on second and third but Shanequa Ballard grounded out to second base and the Lady Tigers squeaked out a 3-2 victory. In her Lady Viking debut, Lauren Walsten went the distance striking out 5 although allowing 5 hits. Each team committed three errors apiece in game one.

It looked as though the Lady Tigers (2-2, CIAA 1-1) were about to complete the sweep as they jumped out to an early 9-0 lead by the close of the second inning of the second contest. That held until ECSU rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6 runs in their half of the 6th to take game two 10-9. Saint Paul's assisted the ECSU comeback with a dismal 8 errors in the game. Asha Martin went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, 3 assists and 2 putouts. In her first appearance as a starter Kristen Cochran picked up the win striking out 4.

The Lady Vikings (1-1, CIAA 1-1) will return to action on March 12th when the host West Liberty State on the ECSU campus. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
