Saint Augustine’s Stuns ECSU in Emergy Gymnasium Saturday Afternoon

RALEIGH, N.C. – Devona Stell tallied 17 points and grabbed 14 boards; recording her seventh double-double on the season as the Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team was stunned 56-54 by Saint Augustine’s University Saturday evening in Emergy Gymnasium.

With the loss, The Lady Vikings fall to 6-6 overall, 0-2 in conference action; while the Falcons improve to 4-7 and 1-1 on the season.

ECSU struggled offensively during the first period, shooting only 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from the field, 25 percent (1-for-4) from behind the arc, and 11.1 percent (1-for-9) from the foul line. The ladies tallied 15 total boards in the first period, but committed seven turnovers.

For the half, the Lady Vikings shot 31.4 percent (13-for-41) from the floor, 28.6 percent (2-for-7) from behind the arc, and 18.2 percent (2-for-11) from the candy stripe; while SAU shot 26.5 percent from the field, 20 percent from down-town, and 81.8 percent from the free throw.

ECSU outscored Saint Augustine’s in the paint, 22-10 and 9-2 in fast break points; while the Falcons outscored Elizabeth City State in points off turnovers, 7-5 and second chance points, 9-7 during the half. The game saw seven lead changes in the first half alone.

The Lady Vikings picked it up in the third quarter offensively shooting 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from the floor and 50 percent (5-for-10).

As a team, ECSU shot 34.9 percent (22-for-63) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-for-9) from behind the arc, and 34.8 per-cent (8-for-23) from the foul line for the game; while SAU shot 29.5 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from down-town, and 76.2 percent from the free throw line.

Senior guard Jalyn Brown finished with 16 points rounding out the ECSU scorers in double-figures; while Kaaliya Williams tallied 16 for the Falcons.
