Lady Vikings Drop Conference Opener on the Road at Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior guard Jalyn Brown recorded a game-high 26 points as the Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team dropped its Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener 72-68 on the road in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium Thursday evening.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings fall to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play; while the Bears improve to 3-6 and 1-1 on the season.

The Lady Vikings opened the game on an 8-2 run before the Bears came roaring back to knot the game at 17-all to close out the first quarter. Both teams were matched evenly tallying 10 points in the paint each; while ECSU outscored Shaw in points off turnovers (9-4), second chance points (8-0), and fast break points (2-0) during the quarter.

Elizabeth City State shot 33.3 percent from the field and 75 percent from the candy stripe for the quarter. The Lady Vikings came out in the second quarter sluggish shooting 35 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from downtown, and 50 percent from the foul line to close out the half.

ECSU outscored the Bears in points in the paint with 16-14, 14-9 points off turnovers, 11-2 second chance points, and 4-0 fast break points in the half.

A 54-51 contest, the Lady Vikings ignited a 6-0 run entering the fourth quarter but the intensity wasn’t enough to fight off the Bear claws. Shaw finished the game shooting 38.6 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from behind the arc, and 78.6 percent from the foul line; while ECSU shot 32.9 percent from the floor, 16.7 percent from downtown, and 64.7 percent from the free throw line.

Junior forward Bridgejae Patterson added 10 points and seven rebounds in her ECSU debut; while senior forward Tantania Brown led the team with 10 boards. Sophomore forward Devona Stell also tallied 10 to round out the Lady Vikings double-digit scorers.

LaQuisha Taylor led the Bears with 22 points and 12 boards; while Lerven Tyler-Johnson added 14, Raquel Kellow tallied 11, and Chelsea Long recorded 10 in the win.

Elizabeth City State faces St. Augustine’s University Saturday in Emergy Gymnasium at 2 p.m. followed by the ECSU men’s team at 4 p.m.
