Lady Vikings Hold off Feisty Big Blues in Joe Manchin Classic

SALEM, W.V. – Devona Stell scored 25 points and hauled in 17 boards to record her sixth double-double on the season as the Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team held off Bluefield State University, 65-54 during the Joe Manchin Classic Sunday afternoon in T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Lady Vikings improved to 5-4; while BSU fall to 1-10 on the season. ECSU took a 9-5 advantage into the second quarter after starting the game off slow on the offensive end.

Elizabeth City State went into the half with a 23-21 lead over the Big Blues after a back and forth second quarter. The Lady Vikings shot 27.8 percent (10-of-36) from the field, 16.7 percent (1-of-6) from downtown, and 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from the foul line in the half. ECSU out-rebounded BSU 30-to-23 as the game saw a lead change from both teams.

Leading by only a four point deficit entering the fourth quarter, Elizabeth City State turned it up with the “BIGS” on the inside. Stell recorded most of her 25 points in the second half; included hauling in seven of her 17 boards.

For the game, ECSU shot 34.3 percent (24-of-70) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from behind the arc, and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the foul line for the game; while BSU shot 24.1 percent (19-of-79) from the field, 20 percent (8-of-40) from downtown, and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free throw line.

Senior guard Jalyn Brown knocked down 15 points and added five boards; while junior forward Alexis Fowler added nine points and nine rebounds in the victory. Sophomore Anaya Eason tallied a career-high 12 rebounds; including five points and a team-high five assists.

Lyric Hampton led the Big Blues offensively with 18 points; while teammate Lyndsay Hatfield added eight rebounds to lead BSU on the defensive end.

The Lady Vikings host Bluefield State University Tuesday, December 12 in the R. L. Vaughan Center at 6 p.m. Also, admission price is half off with an unwrapped Christmas toy in efforts to support the Elizabeth City Police Department’s Toys for Tots Initiative.
