ECSU Knocks Off Host Team Salem International in Joe Manchin Classic

SALEM, W.V. – Senior guard Jalyn Brown recorded 15 points and three boards as Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team knocked off host team Salem International University 54-53 during the first day of the Joe Manchin Classic Saturday evening.

The Lady Vikings (4-4) fell behind early in the first half as SIU went on a 19-7 run closing out the first quarter. Salem In-ternational outscored ECSU 10-4 in the paint during the quarter. The Tigers added eight points off turnovers and two fast break points as well.

Elizabeth City State struggled scoring the ball in the first half, taking a 28-16 deficit into the break. Although being down, the Lady Vikings had six points in the paint, seven points off turnovers, two second chance points, and two fast break points to close out the half.

ECSU turned it on after half, going on a 24-15 run to close out the third period. A layup by sophomore forward Devona Stell with 3:18 remaining in the quarter cut the lead to within nine for the Lady Vikings, 41-32. Elizabeth City State added an 8-2 run to close out a 24-point quarter.

Brown tied the game at 43-all with 8:47 remaining in the contest. Salem International took the lead back up to eight with 4:38 remaining, but the Lady Vikings remained poised and took over the game. A jumper by freshman Quianna Boone-Fudge with 3:49 remaining closed the deficit to within six for ECSU. Two free throws from sophomore guard Anaya Eason and a free throw by junior forward Alexis Fowler tightened the gap to within three, 53-50 with 1:41 remaining.

Brown and Eason lay-ups with .21 left in the ballgame sealed the 54-53 victory for the Lady Vikings. For the game, ECSU shot 35.4 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from the foul line; while SIU shot 30.4 percent from the floor, 24.1 percent from behind the arc, and 36.4 percent from the line.

Stell added her fifth double-double on the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds; including four steals, two assists, and a block on the evening; while Eason tallied 10 rounding out the ECSU scorers in double-figures. Fowler recorded nine boards in her Lady Vikings debut.

The Tigers were led by Keishla Gilmore with 15 points and 13 boards; while teammates Jillian Romero and Aaliyah Dotson added eleven each in the effort.

The Lady Vikings are slated to face Bluefield State University Sunday at Noon in the Joe Manchin Classic before hosting the Big Blues in the R. L. Vaughan Center Tuesday, December 12 at 6 p.m.
