Lady Vikings Travel to Compete in the Joe Manchin Classic at Salem International

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team is slated to compete in the Salem International Tournament, Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 in Salem, W.V. at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.

The Lady Vikings (3-4) set to face host team Salem International University on the 9th at 5 p.m. and Bluefield State Uni-versity on the 10th at noon. Follow ECSU in the Joe Manchin Classic via live stats here:

Elizabeth City State has been carried offensively by senior guard Jalyn Brown throughout its first seven contests. The Williamston, N.C. native is sixth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association averaging 16.9 points per contest; while sophomore forward Devona Stell leads the team defensively and is sixth in the conference with 8.6 boards per game.

Stell also averages 14.9 points per game, including a team leading four double-doubles on the season. She’s also tied for 21st in Division II and second in the conference in double-doubles. Stell is fifth in the conference in field goal percentage shooting 50 percent and defensive rebounds with 43.

As a team, the Lady Vikings average 64.1 points, 15.1 assists, 43.4 rebounds, 15.1 made free throws, 6.9 steals, and 3.0 three point field goals per game; while shooting .392 percent from the floor, .650 percent from the foul line, and .318 percent from behind the arc.

Opponents are shooting .371 percent from the field, .600 from the free throw line, and .261 from downtown. Host team SIU enters Friday’s contest with a 3-5 record, shooting .377 percent from the field, .279 percent from behind the arc, and .523 from the foul line. Keishla Gilmore leads the Tigers with 16.5 points per game; while Isis Mance averages 15.1 points and eight boards per game.

The Big Blues (1-8) enter the Joe Manchin Classic coming off a 79-29 loss to Virginia State University last Saturday afternoon. BSU is shooting 30.8 percent from the field, 30.6 percent from downtown, 59.3 percent from the foul line. Lyric Hampton leads the Big Blues averaging 12.5 points per game; while Lyndsay Hatfield leads the team defensively with 8 boards per contest.
