Lady Vikings Drop Close One to Mount Olive, Wednesday Evening

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team dropped a close 86-83 contest to the University of Mount Olive Wednesday evening in Kornegay Arena.

The Lady Vikings fall to 3-4 with the loss; while the Trojans improve to 2-5 on the season.

ECSU got off to a great start by taking a 25-17 lead going into the second quarter. Mount Olive woke up in the second quarter and went on a 20-14 run to close out the second half, but Elizabeth City State took a two point lead into the half, 39-37.

A back-and-forth contest, the game saw seven lead changes in the third quarter alone with UMO taking a 57-54 ad-vantage going into the fourth quarter. The Trojans went up by eight with 5:51 remaining in the ballgame, before the Lady Vikings came charging back.

A layup by sophomore forward Devona Stell and a jump shot by freshman forward Quianna Boone-Fudge with less than 5:30 remaining in the contest brought ECSU back within four of the Trojans, 73-69. The lead went back up to seven for UMO with 2:47 remaining in the contest until senior guard Jalyn Brown knocked down a three pointer with .53 remaining in the game, making it an 83-81 ballgame.

Stell led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds; while Brown and sophomore Anaya Eason recorded 16 each in the loss. Sophomore guard Tamara Harvey recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and eleven assists on the night.

Ni’Ya Styles led the Trojans with 30 points; while teammates Felecity Havens added 24, Kennedi Jones tallied 13, and Jada Bacchus recorded 10 rounding out all players scoring in double figures.

As a team, ECSU shot 50.7 percent from the field, 50 percent from behind the arc, and 75 percent from the foul line for the game; while UMO shot 45.8 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from downtown, and 75 percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Vikings are slated to compete in the Salem International Tournament, December 9-10 in Salem, W.V. ECSU is set to face host team Salem International University on the 9th at 5 p.m. and Bluefield State University on the 10th at noon.
