Simmons Records First Career Double-Double in Loss to Gannon

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team dropped its season opener 68-50 in Brayboy Gym to Gannon University, Friday evening in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings fell to 0-1; while Gannon improved to 1-0 on the season.

Gannon jumped out to an early 12-8 lead in the first quarter, before pulling away in the second quarter; taking a 30-16 lead into halftime. ECSU tried crawling back into the game after the half, making it a 49-36 contest going into the fourth quarter, but wasn’t able to fully get back into the game.

ECSU shot 25.4 percent from the field, 18 percent from behind the arc, and 53.8 percent from the candy stripe in the effort; while Gannon shot 38.4 percent from the field, 30 percent from downtown, and 50 percent from the line.

Freshman forward Remi Simmons recorded the Vikings first double-double on the season by collecting 13 points and eleven rebounds; while senior guard Jalyn Brown tied a game-high 14 points in the effort.

Maggie Mitchell recorded a game-high 14 points for the Golden Knights; while Nicole LaCava and Chelseas Rourke each tallied 13 points in the victory.

The Vikings are set to face Cheyney University Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge hosted by Johnson C. Smith University in Brayboy Gym.
