ECSU Women Basketball Travels to Charlotte for Season Opening Weekend

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team is set to travel to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge for its season opening weekend.

The Lady Vikings are slated to face off against Gannon University at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 and on Saturday, Nov. 11 face Cheney University at 2 p.m. in Brayboy Gym before coming back home to host Apprentice School, Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. for its home opener.

Elizabeth City State ended its last season slate 5-20 overall after falling in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament to Winston Salem State University, 50-41 in Bojangles Arena under then Interim head coach John Hill. The Lady Vikings are now led by head coach Antonio Davis and look to turn things around in the 2017-18 season.

Davis has six returners from last years’ squad and a host of transfers and freshmen that’ll complete his team. Jalyn Brown returns for her senior season and looks to lead the team again this season. Brown averaged 11.7 points per game for the Lady Vikings last season.

Gannon enters the tournament being led by returning senior guard Maggie Mitchell, who finished last season averaging 17.3 points per game for the Golden Knights offensively. Defensively, GU will look to center Lanise Saunders to continue displaying her presence on the boards and blocking shots. She averaged 8.4 rebounds per game; while tallying 45 blocks last season.

Cheney is being led by junior shooting guard TaKayla Ellis, who posted productive numbers for the Wolves a season ago, averaged 11.9 points per contest; while defensively, the team was being led by sophomore forward Marlon Herring. Herring averaged 8.4 boards per contest.
