LADY VIKINGS HOLD #7 CHOWAN CLOSE BUT FALL SHORT, WEDNESDAY EVENING

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball held #7 Chowan University close but fell short, 71-69 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division shootout Wednesday evening in the Helms Center.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings drop to 9-14 overall and 2-9 (CIAA); while the Lady Hawks improve to 17-4 and 9-2 on the season.

ECSU held Chowan scoreless throughout the first 1:55, after igniting a 7-0 run to start the first quarter until Dhyamond Crenshaw recorded CU’s first two points in the contest.

With 8:04 remaining in the first half, the Lady Vikings opened up a 24-12 run to take a 43-39 lead going into the half. Freshman guard Makala Sutton led the way for Elizabeth City State with nine points at the half; while Crenshaw and Chantel Roberts both added 10 each for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Vikings shot 50 percent from the floor, 75 percent from behind the arc, and 50 percent from the candy stripe; while Chowan was held to only 35 percent shooting from the field, 25 percent shooting from downtown, and 53.8 percent shooting from the foul line.

A back and forth second half, CU led ECSU by as much as 10 points with .42 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Elizabeth City State finished the game shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from behind the arc, and 58.3 percent from the free-throw line; while holding Chowan to only 33.3 percent shooting from the floor, 28 percent shooting from downtown, and 58.3 percent shooting from the candy stripe.

The game saw seven ties and five lead changes with the Lady Hawks outscoring ECSU in the paint (30-22), off turnovers (21-14); while the Lady Vikings outscored CU in second chance points (10-8), fast break points (8-7), and bench points (22-6).

Sophomore forward Devona Stell added her tenth double-double on the season recording 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead ECSU. Sophomore guard Tamara Harvey added 12 points; while senior guard Jalyn Brown tallied 10 points in the effort.

The Lady Hawks had four starters in double-figures with Chantel Roberts leading the way after recording a double-double. Roberts collected 15 points and 16 boards; while Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jada Lee added 16 points each and Mariah Coker tallied 13 points in the victory.

Elizabeth City State will travel to Lincoln University for a CIAA North showdown, Saturday, Feb. 10. The women’s contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m.
