LADY VIKINGS FALL TO NO. 4 VIRGINIA UNION IN BARCO STEVENS ARENA

RICHMOND, Va. – The Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team fell 88-54 to No. 4 Virginia Union University in Barco Stevens Arena Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lady Vikings fall to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while 19-1 overall and 10-0 in the conference on the season.

Elizabeth City State trailed at the half, 42-25 after shooting 29 percent from the field, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 55.6 percent from the candy stripe; while VUU closed out the half shooting 44.7 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from downtown, and 54.5 percent from the foul line.

ECSU was outscored 24-10 points in the paint, 17-5 points off turnovers, 8-2 second chance points, 14-2 fast break points, and 13-2 bench points during the first half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Vikings didn’t see much change, but continued to fight shooting 16.7 percent from the floor, 28.6 percent from downtown, and 100 percent from the candy stripe; while the Lady Panthers closed out the quarter shooting 35.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 90 percent from the free-throw line.

Senior guard Jalyn Brown led Elizabeth City State with 16 points and added four rebounds; while sophomore forward Devona Stell tallied eleven in the effort. Senior guard Chalise Greenwood recorded seven rebounds to lead ECSU on the boards.

The Lady Vikings closed out the game shooting 30.2 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from downtown, and 61.1 percent from the candy stripe; while the Lady Panthers finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, 23.8 percent from behind the arc, and 65.4 percent from the foul line.

Alexis Johnson recorded 22 points, grabbed nine boards, and tallied eight blocks for Virginia Union in the victory. Rejoice Spivey and Rachael Pecota each knocked down 12 points for VUU to round out the scorers in double-figures.

Elizabeth City State will host Livingstone College Monday, Jan. 29 in the R. L. Vaughan Center. First game is slated for 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
