ETTRICK, Va. – Sophomore forward Devona Stell tallied 13 points and snatched 15 boards as the Elizabeth City State University women’s basketball team fell short to Virginia State University, 44-41 in the VSU Multipurpose Center Wednesday evening. This is Stell’s tenth double-double on the season.

ECSU ignited an early 6-2 run before the Trojans came charging back taking a 13-7 advantage to close out the first quarter. The Lady Vikings shot 25 percent from the field and 50 percent from the candy stripe; while VSU shot 27.8 percent from the field, 10 percent from behind the arc, and 100 percent from the line.

At the half, Elizabeth City State trailed the Lady Trojans, 18-16 after shooting 30 percent from the field, 40 percent from downtown, and 33.3 percent from the candy stripe. The Lady Vikings also held VSU to only 18.2 percent shooting from the field and 12.5 percent from behind the arc in the second quarter, closing out the half on a 9-5 run.

ECSU was outscored in the paint 10-8, points off turnovers 7-5, second chance points 4-0, fast break points 8-4, but led in bench points 2-0 during the first half.

The third quarter saw two lead changes and the score tied twice, with Virginia State closing out the quarter on a 14-8 run. The Lady Vikings shot 20 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the foul line.

Elizabeth City State finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field, 13.3 percent from downtown, and 53.8 percent from the line; while the Trojans concluded the contest shooting 25.9 percent from the field, 13.3 percent from behind the arc, and 83.3 percent from the foul line.

The Lady Vikings led VSU with points in the paint (28-18), second chance points (9-4), and bench points (5-2), but got outscored in points off turnovers (18-11), and fast break points (16-6).

Alexis Smith recorded 26 points to lead the Trojans. The game saw four ties and three lead changes.

Both teams are scheduled to travel to Virginia Union University Saturday, Jan. 27 in the Barco Stevens Arena. First game is slated for 2:00 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 4:00 p.m.
