CLAYTON, N.C. -- The Elizabeth City State University golf team closed out day one of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Southern Championship in fifth place at the par 71, 6508-yard Pine Hollow Golf Course, Monday evening.

The Vikings concluded their first round with a +49 (333 team total); which was 27 strokes behind leader Saint Augustine's University +22 (306), 23 strokes behind Livingstone College + 26 (310), 17 strokes behind Virginia Union University +32 (316), and 14 strokes behind Chowan +35 (319).

Although the team finished fifth; individually, ECSU had two players placed in the top 20 golfers. Senior golfer Tyler Futrell placed third with a 74 (+3) over par behind leader Sam Cudjoe of Saint Augustine's, who shot a 65 (-2) and Alex Stuart of Livingstone, who shot a 73 (+2); while junior golfer Taylor Guarracino finished the round tied for 17th with an 81 (+10) out of 45 competitors.

Sophomore golfer Alex O'Connor tied for 29th with an 88 (+17); while senior golfer William Fallon tied for 32nd with a 90 (+19) and junior golfer Derrick Beach finished 43rd with a 128 (+57) on the day to round out the Elizabeth City State par-ticipants in the field.

Johnson C. Smith University placed sixth with a team total of 339 (+55); while Fayetteville State University placed sev-enth with a team total of 345 (+61) and Virginia State University finished with a team total 390 (+106) on the day.

Day two of the 2018 CIAA Southern Golf Championship is slated for an 11:34 a.m. tee time start Tuesday, March 27 at the Pine Hollow Golf Course.
