Vikings Placed Fifth at St. Augustine’s Invitational

CLAYTON, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s golf team placed fifth at the 2017 St. Augustine’s University Invitational on Pine Hollow Golf Course, Tuesday afternoon.

After a positive showing day one of the tournament, shooting a +55 on a par 71, 6508-yard golf course to open its spring season, ECSU hit a stumbling block falling beneath that on day two, shooting a +72.

Above host team St. Augustine’s and Paine in the final rankings, the Vikings shot a total of 356 and was led by junior golfer Tyler Futrell, who shot a team-low 83 (+12) and placed 18th on the leaderboard. Sophomore Taylor Guarrancino recorded an 84 (+13) and placed 19th on the leaderboard; while freshman Travis Fletcher shot a 102 (+31), junior Jona-than Turnage shot 142 (+71) and senior Dwayne Ponton recorded a 147 (+76) to round out the ECSU golfers’ stats.

Virginia Union University won the Invitational shooting a team total of 308 (+24) for the afternoon; while Chowan Uni-versity shot four stokes higher 312 (+28) to take second place.

The Elizabeth City State University men’s golf team travels to Kinston, N.C. to compete in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Championships, Sunday, March 26 thru Tuesday, March 28.
