ECSU's Tabbs and Cherry Named 2016 HBCU Gameday D2 All-Americans

Dec. 9, 2016

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State University's senior tight end Victor Tabbs and senior defensive back Malcolm Cherry were named to the 2016 HBCU Gameday Division II All-America team Monday, Dec. 5 by HBCU Gameday the Magazine.

Tabbs ranked first amongst all Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tight ends and sixth overall in receptions with 39 for 639 yards; while averaging 3.9 per contest during his senior campaign. He also finished the season with three touchdowns and averaged 16.4 yards per catch.

Cherry led the CIAA in pass break-ups with 17 throughout the 2016 season. He ranked tied for sixth in the league in tackles with 49 total, third in the league in interceptions with four, and tied for first in the conference in field goal blocks with two.

"To be recognized as All-American, was a big surprise but also a huge accomplishment for me," Cherry rebottled. "Also, being able to play another game in January is big because I will be able to display my talents and skills for scouts; and a chance to play on Sundays."

Head coach Earnest Wilson earned the 2016 CIAA Football Coach of the Year honors last month during the conference's football banquet after leading his team to a 5-5 overall record, going 4-3 in conference play, and 3-2 in the Northern Division. Throughout the season, Elizabeth City State climbed the rankings in the Northern Division and had a run to appear at the 2016 CIAA Football Championship after upsetting division rivals Chowan University (40-21) and Virginia Union University (24-21).

"Playing for Coach Wilson and staff were great because we competed every day and everyone worked hard," said Cherry. "The record didn't show that but we played against two tough D-I teams and the conference teams weren't push-overs either. I still think we had a great season; by far the best since I've been here."
