Vikings Fall Short to Panthers in Hovey Stadium, Saturday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. – Elizabeth City State University senior place kicker Joshua Laverty connected on a 41-yard field goal with 11:44 remaining in the ballgame, but it wasn’t enough as Virginia Union University defeated the Vikings, 37-21 Saturday evening in Hovey Stadium.

With the loss, ECSU falls to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while the Panthers improve to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The Vikings came out the half sluggish in the second half; giving up a touchdown and a 37-yard field goal to VUU in the third quarter. ECSU’s senior place kicker Joshua Laverty connected on a 41-yard field goal with 11:44 remaining in the ballgame, but it wasn’t enough for the Vikings capture the victory.

After senior Daquan Neal threw a pick six on the opening play from scrimmage, ECSU took control of the game; while scoring on its next drive and taking the ball 74-yards in 19 plays tying the contest at 7-7 with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter.

Elizabeth City State recorded a score with 12:44 remaining in the first half on a pass play that went for 21-yards from freshman Navarro Price to junior Dion Yarborough, making it a 13-7 contest. The Vikings defense forced five three and outs and a fumble; holding the Panthers to 98-yards on 25-plays; while taking a 16-7 lead into the half.

Junior linebacker Vincent Thomas led ECSU with a total of eight tackles including a sack and two tackles for a loss. Junior Jonathan Turnage tallied seven tackles including a tackle for loss and a PAT return for a two-point conversion.

Neal finished the game completing 19 of his 35 attempted passes for 155 yards. Price finished with 36 total yards passing and a touchdown. Senior punter Fisher McInville averaged 47.8 yards per punt on the evening.

The Vikings host Bowie State University for Senior Day/Think Pink next Saturday, November 4, 2017. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
