Vikings Football Falls in Durham County Memorial Stadium to Shaw University

DURHAM, N.C. – A Shaw University eight-yard touchdown scamper with 1:19 remaining in the contest handed the Elizabeth City State University Vikings its second loss on the season, 23-17 Saturday evening in Durham County Memorial Stadium.

ECSU (3-2 overall; 1-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) opened the second half with a three and out after deferring the toss. On defense, sophomore defensive back Tyvonn Williams forced a fumble to set up good field position for the Vikings. Senior quarterback Daquan Neal found senior wide out Darious White on a nine-yard pass play to take a 14-10 lead.

With 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, Shaw (2-3 overall; 1-1 CIAA) scored on an eleven-yard pass play from Darron Downing to Will Davis capping off a two-play, 13-yard drive, taking a 17-14 lead over the Vikings. A Joshua Laverty 38-yard field for ECSU with 10:25 remaining in the contest knotted the game at 17-17.

The Bears jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their second drive of the contest on a 46-yard sweep play off the right side with 8:36 remaining in the first quarter.

The Vikings got off to a sluggish start in the first half, recording only seven points in the first half. The touchdown came at the 10:42 mark in the second quarter off a junior running back Chase Byrum one-yard scamper up the middle, capping a four play, 58-yard touchdown drive for ECSU and knotting the game at 7-all.

Elizabeth City State gained 126 total yards (96 passing and 30 rushing) in 25 plays during the first half. Offensively, the Vikings were 0-for-5 on third down conversions and 0-for-1 on fourth down conversions.

Senior lineman Jerrell Timmons led ECSU with nine tackles (eight solos and an assist); including 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss.

The Vikings return home to host the Virginia State University Trojans October 7 at 1 p.m. in Roebuck Stadium for its Vikings versus Hunger Game. Patrons who bring 10 pounds of groceries will get into the game for $5.
