ECSU Vikings Defeat Johnson C. Smith, 20-17 Saturday Afternoon

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- On a humid Saturday afternoon in Roebuck Stadium, the Elizabeth City State University football team defeated the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith, 20-17 on its "Take a Kid to the Game Day" event.

With the victory, the Vikings improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while JCSU falls to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.

ECSU was held to a quick three and out their first possession of the game, before capping off a seven play, 53-yard touchdown scoring drive with a four yard run by senior quarterback Daquan Neal to take a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive by the Vikings, junior running back Chase Byrum scampered in from four yards out, giving ECSU a 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.

Johnson C. Smith would answer with a scoring drive of its own to open the second quarter. Running back Desmond Dozier caught a three yard pass reception to give the Golden Bulls their first six points of the game. JCSU would cap off the scoring drive with a Carlo Thomas run to complete the two point conversion and make it a six point contest.

Johnson C. Smith recorded a field goal with 5:12 remaining in the half, giving the Vikings a three point lead going into the half, 14-11.

The Golden Bulls came out of the half and scored on their first possession of the second half on a 38 yard pass play from quarterback Terrance Ervin to Dozier, gifting JCSU its first lead on the season, 17-14 but it wouldn't stick for long.

With 9:27 remaining in the third quarter, Neal connected with Byrum for his second touchdown on the afternoon off a 26 yard pass play; which capped a seven play, 74 yard drive and making it a 20-17 contest.

Neal finished the day with 211 yards, on 16 completions, 35 attempts, and an interception; while Byrum led all rushers with 52 yards on the ground. Junior wide out Deon Yarborough finished with 54 yards, leading all ECSU receivers; while junior Jonathan Turnage ended the with eight tackles (seven assisted/two assisted).

The Vikings are set to face Shaw next Saturday, Sept. 30 on the road in Durham, N.C. at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
