Rocky Mount, N.C.-The city of Rocky Mount will host a press conference this Thursday, Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. in the 3rd floor council chambers of the Frederick E. Turnage Municipal Building to officially announce activities surrounding the 20th annual Down East Viking Football Classic.

The culminating event for this year's classic includes a game pitting Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) against Fayetteville State University at the Rocky Mount Municipal Stadium.

"As always, the city of Rocky Mount is excited to be the site for the annual press conference, the football classic and the many other Down East Viking Football Classic events," said Tameka Kenan-Norman, public affairs manager for the city of Rocky Mount. "The public is cordially invited to attend the press conference for announcements on the week's additional activities like the quiz bowl, golf challenge and ECSU recruitment reception. Events will be especially exciting this year because it is the 20th annual classic."

After a 0-2 start the Elizabeth City State Vikings rebounded to win five of their last eight games and finish the season 5-5 under now second-year head coach Earnest Wilson.

Among those wins were a Down East Viking Football Classic Championship over Morehouse College (35- 30) and victories over long-time Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division foes Chowan University (40-21) and Virginia Union (24-21). With six returning starters on offense and eight returners coming back on the defense, the Vikings are expected to contend for the 2017 CIAA title.
