VIKINGS PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN THE CIAA EASTERN DIVISION

July 24, 2008

PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Viking football team was picked to finish second in the CIAA Eastern Division when the 2008 Predicted Order of Finish and Pre-Season All-CIAA Team was announced at the Annual CIAA Football Press Conference Thursday morning at Jones Dining Hall on the campus of Virginia State University.

The Pre-Season All-CIAA Team and Predicted Order of Finish is voted on annually by the CIAA Football Coaches Association.

ECSU was picked to place second in the CIAA Eastern Division behind defending divisional champion Virginia Union University. Last season, the Vikings finished 5-5 overall (CIAA 5-2) and fell just short of a second consecutive trip to the CIAA Championship Game. The Shaw Bears, last year's conference champion, was selected to repeat atop the CIAA Western Division. Fayetteville State, Saint Augustine's, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone College and the CIAA's newest member Chowan University round out the predicted order for the Western Division.

After the Panthers and Vikings in the East, Bowie State, Virginia State and Saint Paul's were picked to finish third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The Vikings lone All-CIAA Pre-Season selection goes to junior punter/kicker Daniel Mendez. A native of Riverside, CA, Mendez was tabbed to the All- CIAA Pre-Season Defensive Team as a punter. Last season he was twice named CIAA Specialty Player of the Week and finished sixth in the league in punting with an average 35.0 yards per punt (long of 63 yards).

The Vikings will open the 2008 season at home against Chowan University on Saturday, August 30 at 7:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
