VIKINGS OUST PANTHERS IN THRILLING 24-21 HOMECOMING VICTORY

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- With the race for first place in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division heating up, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings continue leaving its calling card; ousting Virginia Union University 24-21 Saturday afternoon in Roebuck Stadium on Homecoming.
ECSU improves to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play; while the Panthers sit at (5-4, 4-2). Elizabeth City State remains in a three-way tie for first with Virginia State University and Bowie State University.
After a slow start following the 1:30 p.m. kickoff, the Vikings rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter to out-score VUU 24-7 over the rest of the game.
Elizabeth City State recorded its points of the game on a 36-yard field goal off the foot of Fisher McInville, 14-3. With :19 remaining in the first half, quarterback Daquan Neal's 12-yard touchdown run gave ECSU a lift going into the locker room down, 14-9.
Virginia Union scored on an 86-yard punt return with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter, before the Vikings began their relentless come back, 21-9.
ECSU rallied to add 15 unanswered points to stun the Panthers, with a little over 18:00 left in the ballgame. Running back Chase Byrum recorded the first six after capitalizing on a four-yard touchdown drive that went 44-yards in six-plays with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter, 21-16.
Neal's four-yard touchdown run with 8:28 remaining in the contest, gave ECSU a 24-21 lead and eventually the game.
Elizabeth City State finished with 470-yards of total offense (273 rushing, 197 passing). The Vikings controlled the game's time of possession, 40:29 to 19:31.
Neal led ECSU's offense with 85-yards rushing and 197-yards passing. He also added two rushing touchdowns. Victor Tabb led the Vikings receiving core with six receptions for 77-yards.
Defensively, Soloman Radcliffe tallied six total tackles (two solo, four assists). He also added a half sack for a two-yard loss and a tackle for loss which went for a three-yard loss.
Elizabeth City State travels to Bowie, Md., Saturday, Nov. 5 to face Bowie State University in Bulldog Stadium for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
