ECSU VIKINGS TAME TIGERS 30-12
Oct. 2, 2010
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings held Saint Paul's College to 139 yards of total offense in a 30-12 victory Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium.
After a shaky start yielded a 6-3 halftime deficit, ECSU exploded for 27 points while defensively surrendering only 12 yards of total offense to the Tigers after the intermission.
The Vikings got on the board for the first time on Saturday with a 44-yard field by Devon Pike as the first half expired. The Tigers (1-4, CIAA 1-1) had no answers as the Vikings' offense scored on four of their first five possessions in the second half; the first a 25-yard rushing touchdown by Kevin Swain with 10:10 left in the 3rd quarter. Before third would expire, Creven Powell would rush for a 13-yard score and then hook up with Dexter Manley for a 72-yard bomb which pushed the Viking lead to 23-6.
Swain capped off his career day (17 carries for 105 yards) by adding another rushing touchdown with 12:22 left in the game. He carried the load on the ground for ECSU on Saturday after Daronte McNeill went down with a twisted ankle three plays into the Vikings' first drive of the afternoon. Limited in action, McNeill finished the afternoon with 52 yards on 11 carries. Altogether the Vikings ground game went for 262 yards.
Defensively ECSU was paced by Terry Griffin and DeWitt Dixon who each finished with 6 tackles apiece. The Viking defense kept the pressure on Tiger quarterback Steven Miller-Cohen, hurrying him a total of 17 times and sacking him on three different occasions.
The Vikings (3-2, CIAA 2-0) will complete their three-game home stand when they welcome Virginia Union University to Roebuck Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
