ECSU Men’s Basketball Defeats Bluefield State at Home

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Junior guard Shyheid Petteway recorded 15 points and grabbed four boards as the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team defeated Bluefield State University in a non-conference match-up, 71-52 in the R. L. Vaughan Center Saturday afternoon before continuing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on next Thursday.

With the victory, ECSU improved to 4-5 overall; while Big Blue State falls to 3-8 on the season.

The Vikings led the entire contest; while taking a 31-21 lead into the half. ECSU shot 41.9 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the foul line in the first half; while BSTATE shot 27.3 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from downtown, and 70 percent from the free throw line.

During the second half, Bluefield State made a surge but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Elizabeth City State as the Vikings shot 45.2 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from behind the arc, and 64.3 percent from the foul line. For the game ECSU finished shooting 43.5 percent from the floor, 18.8 percent from behind the arc, and 70 percent from the candy stripe.

Freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs added 13 points and three rebounds; while both senior forward Jermaine Brown and junior forward Joseph Allen tallied 10 each to round out the Viking scorers.

Chris Melton led Big Blue State with 13 points; while teammate Shawn Duhon added eleven in the effort.

ECSU is set to host Livingston College Thursday, Jan. 4 in the R.L. Vaughan Center following the women’s contest beginning at 5:30 p.m.
