Vikings Fall to Shaw in CIAA Opener on the Road

RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs scored 17 points in his Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association debut as the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team fell 105-85 on the road to Shaw University in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Thursday evening.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play; while the Bears improve to and 2-0 in conference action on the season.

Elizabeth City State fell behind 57-37 after an early 8-4 run going into the half. Shaw added 16 bench points in the first half; while ECSU had only nine.

ECSU was outscored by Shaw in points off turnovers (22-11), points in the paint (34-12), second chance points (6-4), and fast break points (10-0) during the first half. Elizabeth City State shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from the field, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from downtown, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the candy stripe for the half.

The Vikings came out in the second half lighting it up. Junior guard Corey Mendez ignited a 24-14 run for ECSU going into the under 10 media timeout.

ECSU finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 58.1 percent from the foul line; while SU shot 56.3 percent from the floor, 38.9 percent from downtown, and 76.5 percent from the free throw line. Shaw finished the game outscoring the Vikings 56-30 points in the paint, 30-21 point off turnovers, and 12-2 fast break points.

Sophomore forward John Maynor led ECSU with 22 points; while junior guard Shyheid Petteway recorded 11 and freshman forward Shykeef Daniels added 10 to round out the Elizabeth City State players in double-figures.

DeAnge Stephens-Bell led the way for Shaw with 24 points. Krishaun Myers recorded 23 points, Savon Goodman added 19, and DaVaughn Kelsie tallied 17 rounding out the SU players in double-figures.

Elizabeth City State faces St. Augustine’s University Saturday in Emergy Gymnasium at 2 p.m. followed by the ECSU men’s team at 4 p.m.
