Vikings Win Close One in Home Opener Over Barton College

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team came back from behind to knock off Barton College in its home opener Tuesday evening in the R. L. Vaughan Center, 86-82.

With the victory, the Vikings improve to 2-1; while the Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the season.

Sophomore John Maynor led all scoring with 22 points; while freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs followed with 19. ECSU jumped out to an early lead but went into the half down by five points, 38-33. Coming out at the half, the Vikings were still a little sluggish, but eventually picked it up at the 15:34 mark of the second half off two free throws by junior guard Corey Mendez.

Elizabeth City State tied the game at 58-all with 10:34 remaining in the game and went to work from there to close out the four point victory.

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway recorded 16 points; while Mendez rounded out the Viking players in double figures with 13.

Barton had five scorers in double figures. Bobby Stenborg and Jeff Gordon led the way with 16 each; while Jake Kakar and Michael Boykin tallied 12 points each. Zach Grant rounded out the Bulldogs in double figures.

For the game, ECSU shot 45.3 percent from the floor, 40.9 percent from the behind the arc, and 78.4 percent from the foul line; while Barton finished with 44.9 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent from downtown, and 65.2 percent from the candy stripe.

The Vikings face Winston Salem State University, November 25 at 2 p.m. in the Virginia Union University Holiday Inn West End Classic hosted by VUU.
