Vikings Drop 69-61 Decision to West Virginia State in Earl Lloyd Classic

INSTITUTE, W.V. -- Junior guard Corey Mendez dropped 17 points and collected six rebounds in Elizabeth City State men's basketball team 69-61 defeat to host team West Virginia State in the Earl Lloyd Classic Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 1-1; while the Yellow Jackets improved to 1-1 on the season.

A back-and-forth battle throughout the first seven minutes of the contest, until WVSU's Alex Osburn connected on a three pointer at the 13:10 mark to give the Yellow Jackets a 13-9 lead and the momentum. ECSU went into the locker room at the half down, 45-31.

After the half, a Mendez tip-in ignited a 9-4 run for the Vikings to cut into West Virginia State's deficit and making it a 49-44 contest. Elizabeth City State tied the contest at 55-all with 8:00 remaining in the contest, but again the Yellow Jackets pulled away and took the eight point victory.

Charles Woods added another strong performance for the Vikings as he finished with eleven boards and nine points; while freshman guard Justin Faison and sophomore forward John Maynor each recorded nine points in the effort as well.

ECSU shot 41.8 percent from the floor, 23.5 percent from behind the arc, and 73.3 percent from the line for the game; while WVSU shot 44.9 percent from the floor, 32.3 percent from downtown, and 93.8 percent from the candy stripe.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Ernest Jenkins with 16 points and Jerry Moore, who added eleven.

The Vikings are set to host Barton College Tuesday, Nov. 14 in the R. L. Vaughan Center at 7:30 p.m.
