Woods Game High 17 Points Helps Lead ECSU Men’s Basketball Past UVA-Wise

INSTITUTE, W.V. – Junior forward Charles Woods recorded 17 points and nine rebounds to help lift the Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team past the University of Virginia-Wise, 85-68 in the West Virginia State University “Earl Lloyd” Classic at Walker Convocation Center Friday evening.

With the victory, John Hill picks up his first win as head coach and the Vikings are 1-0; while the Cavaliers fall to 0-1 on the season.

A layup by Woods with 7:39 remaining in the first half gave ECSU a 29-28 lead, before the Vikings went on a 10-0 run and grasping a comfortable 31-22 lead. Elizabeth City State took a 46-32 lead into the half.

Coming out of the half, UVA-Wise cut the deficit to five (50-45), but the Vikings immediately reeled off seven straight points to regain the momentum and finished off the Cavs, 85-68.

The Vikings hit 56.9 percent from the floor and pulled down 36 rebounds; while UVA-Wise recorded just 41.3 percent from the field and lost the battle on the boards with just 24 rebounds.

ECSU had six players who recorded double digit numbers scoring. Junior guard Corey Mendez recorded 13 points and four blocks; while sophomore forward John Maynor, senior Jermaine Brown, and freshman guard Justin Faison each tallied eleven points on the evening.

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway collected 10 points in the win to round out the double digit scoring for ECSU. Tajh Eason led UVA-Wise with 15 points in the effort.

The Vikings are set to face host team West Virginia State Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. This game can also be seen via live stream on the same stream.
