Vikings Open Season Friday at WVSU’s “Earl Lloyd” Classic

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – After a short preseason, the Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team 2017-18 campaign officially begins Friday against the University at Virginia-Wise to open West Virginia State University’s “Earl Lloyd” Classic.

ECSU faces UVA-Wise on Friday and on Saturday face host team West Virginia State at 4 p.m. The Vikings return only four student-athletes from a year ago and have acquired John Hill as head coach. Hill has brought in a new coaching staff and an entire different squad.

One athlete returning from last year’s team is sophomore forward John Maynor. Maynor was named to the 2016-17 All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Rookie team after averaging 10.3 points per game during his freshman campaign.

He also recorded 22 steals and 20 assists; while averaging 2.6 boards per game. Forward Jermaine Brown returns for his senior season campaign with junior guards Shyheid Petteway and Brandon Roddy to round out ECSU’s returners.

Dimitri Sousa and Ricardo Hill, Jr. return from a season ago to lead the Cavaliers. Sousa was the second leading scorer and rebounder on the team, averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 boards per contest.

West Virginia State returns its assist leader and leading scorer sophomore Ernest Jenkins. Jenkins averaged 16.9 points per game; while recording 94 assists in 27 of his 27 games played last season. He also averaged 3.3 boards per contest.
