ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs recorded 18 points to lead Elizabeth City State University past Virginia Union University, 72-68 on Senior Night in the R. L. Vaughan Center Wednesday evening. Seniors honored were: Jermaine Brown; Chalise Greenwood; D’Asya Wilson; Toreon Land; and Justyn Smith.

With the victory, the Vikings improve to 12-13 overall and 5-10 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while VUU fell to 13-14 and 8-7 on the season.

ECSU went into the half down by seven to VUU, 32-25 after shooting 35.7 percent from the floor, 21.4 percent from behind the arc, and 50 percent from the candy stripe; while Virginia Union shot 48 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from downtown, and 60 percent from the candy stripe.

The Panthers was outscoring ECSU in points in the paint (18-6), points off turnovers (10-2), fast break points (8-0), and in bench points (7-5) throughout the first half. Union led by as many as 14 points with 16:37 remaining in the contest, coming out of the break.

The second half saw four ties and five lead changes; with ECSU holding gaining momentum. A three-pointer off the finger-tips of Hobbs with 13:48 remaining in the contest ignited a 26-14 run for the Vikings and tied the contest at 65-all. Junior guard Shyheid Petteway made his two free-throws to give ECSU a 67-65 lead. A lay-up from junior forward Charles Wood with .23 seconds remaining in the game gave Elizabeth City State its final lead on the night, as the Vikings took a 72-68 contest from the Panthers.

ECSU finished the game shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 29.6 percent from downtown, and 70.6 percent from the candy stripe; while VUU shoot 50 percent from the floor, 21.4 percent from behind the line, and 76.5 percent from the foul line.

Union led in points in the paint (36-24) and fast break points (10-8); while the Vikings led the game in points off turnovers (16-12, second chance points (12-10), and bench points (29-22).

Petteway and sophomore forward John Maynor closed out the contest with 13 each; while senior guard Toreon Land added 10 in his home finale for ECSU.

Todd Hughes led Virginia Union with 18 points; while Andre Walker added eleven and James Paige, Kori Cooley, and Devin Moore tallied 10 points each for the Panthers in the effort.

Elizabeth City State will travel to Bowie State University for a CIAA North showdown, Saturday, Feb. 24. The women’s contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m.
