VIKINGS FALL TO JOHNSON C. SMITH, MONDAY EVENING

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- The Elizabeth City State University men's basketball team fell to Johnson C. Smith University, 76-58 in the R. L. Vaughan Center Monday evening.

With the loss, ECSU declines to 9-11 overall and 2-8 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while the Golden Bulls improve to 15-7 and 8-2 on the season.

After being knotted up at the half, 39-all, Johnson C. Smith went on a 13-2 run to start the second half before ECSU closed the gap back to within three; making it a 52-49 contest before the 8:00 minute mark. The Golden Bulls opened up another run, before junior guard Corey Mendez's lay-up at the 3:46 mark trimmed the lead back to within 10 for the Vikings, 67-57.

During the first half, ECSU shot 40.6 percent from the floor, 30 percent from behind the arc, and 87.5 percent from the free-throw line; while JCSU shot 45.2 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from downtown, and 88.9 percent from the candy stripe.

Elizabeth City State finished the game shooting 32.8 percent from the floor, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 62.5 percent from the foul line; while the Golden Bulls closed out the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field, 27.8 per-cent from downtown, and 78.9 percent from the line.

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway led the Vikings with 13 points and four boards; while sophomore forward John Maynor added 10 in the effort.

Johnson C. Smith had four starters in double-figures; including Robert Davis, who recorded a game-high 25 points. Arthur Bennett and Roddric Ross tallied 15 each; while Christian Kirchman collected 10 in the victory to round out all scorers in double-figures. Cayse Minor added eleven boards for the Golden Bulls.

Elizabeth City State is set to travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. Wednesday evening to take on CIAA rival Chowan University in the Helms Center. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. for the women's contest and 7:30 p.m. for the men's game.
