VIKINGS TAKE DOWN IN-TOWN RIVAL MACU

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team took down in-town rival Mid-Atlantic Christian in the R. L. Vaughan Center Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup, 96-78. The Vikings improved to 9-9 on the season.

ECSU jumped out to 57-25 advantage in the first half, shooting 61.3 percent from the field, 60 percent from downtown, and 100 percent from the foul line; while holding MACU to only 28.6 percent from the floor, 17.6 percent from behind the arc, and 50 percent from the line.

In the second half, the Mustangs went on a 53-39 run to close out the 96-78 contest, shooting 52.9 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from behind the arc, and 75 percent from the candy stripe; while holding the Vikings to only 50 per-cent shooting from the floor, 33.3 percent shooting from downtown, and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Elizabeth City State was able to outscore MACU in points in the paint (34-32), points off turnovers (20-16), fast break points (10-6), and in bench points (46-25), but didn’t outscore them in second chance points (18-11).

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway led the Vikings with 20 points; while freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs added 13, fresh-man guard Shykeef Daniels and junior forward Charles Woods tallied 12 each, and sophomore forwards John Maynor and Joseph Allen collected 10 each in the victory.

Dixon Ogwo and Grayson Tejeda recorded a double-double for Mid-Atlantic Christian. Ogwo added 20 points and 10 boards; while Tejeda tallied 12 boards and 10 assists in the effort. Leander Williams scored 15 points and Tyler Hendrix collected 12 to round out all players in double-figures.

Elizabeth City State will host Bowie State University for its Winter Homecoming, Saturday, Feb. 3 in the R. L. Vaughan Center at 2 p.m. followed by the ECSU men’s team at 4 p.m.
