Vikings Capture First Victory at Winston Salem, Monday Evening

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior forward Matthew McIntosh recorded the winning basket with .10 remaining as the Elizabeth City State men’s basketball team captured its first victory on the season at CE Gaines Arena over Winston Salem State University Monday evening.

A game that came down to the wire, “Literally” boosted ECSU to a 1-17 overall record and 1-10 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while WSSU falls to 8-12; 4-7.

The Vikings trailed the entire game, after falling behind 49-40 going into halftime. The Rams led ECSU by 18 (40-22) at the 6:39 mark of the first half, before senior Jordan Jones ignited an 18-9 run with 6:12 remaining in the half.

Elizabeth City State made 15-of-31 (48.8%) from the field, 4-of-14 (28.6%) from behind the arc, 6-of-9 (66.7%) from the foul line during the first half. The Vikings saw a better second half shooting performance, connecting on 15-of-24 shots made from the floor, 3-of-7 shots made from behind the arc, and 10-of-12 shots made from the candy stripe.

For the game, the team shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from downtown, and 76.2 percent from the free throw line. ECSU held Winston Salem to only 27.3 percent shooting down the stretch.

Jones paced the Vikings with 20 points and eight boards; while freshman forward John Maynor recorded 14, McIntosh scored eleven with eight boards, and seniors Javonte Miles and Kyree Marshall added 10 each, respectively to round out the ECSU scorers in double-figures. Robert Colon led the Rams with 21 points; while Ameer Jackson scored 18 in the effort.
