RICHMOND, Va. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team knocked off Virginia Union University, 84-80 in Barco Stevens Arena Saturday evening; while collecting its second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association victory on the season.

With the victory, the Vikings improve to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the CIAA; while the Panthers fall to 11-10 overall and 6-3 in conference action.

ECSU tied the game at 53-all with less than 12:50 remaining in the game and took the lead (56-53) with 12:24 remaining in the game; which the Vikings never looked back from.

Elizabeth City State closed out the half shooting 56.7 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from downtown, and 50 per-cent from the candy stripe; while Virginia Union was held to 53.8 percent shooting from the floor, 25 percent from be-hind the arc, and 76.9 percent from the foul line.

Elizabeth City State jumped out to an early 10-9 lead until the Panthers came crawling back to take an 11-9 advantage with 13:27 remaining in the first half. Union took a 39-37 lead going into the half. ECSU ended the half on an 11-2 run shooting 44 percent from the floor, 30 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the candy stripe; while VUU shot 50 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from downtown, and 40 percent from the free-throw line.

The half saw three ties and three lead changes with VUU outscoring ECSU in points in the paint (18-14), points off turnovers (13-6), second chance points (5-4), fast break points (10-6), and bench points (18-13).

The Vikings finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, 30 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the foul line; while VUU shot 51.7 percent from the field, 30 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the candy stripe.

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway led ECSU with 23 points; while freshman forward Shykeef Daniels added 18 points, junior guard Corey Mendez tallied 11 points and sophomore forward Charles Woods recorded 10 points, rounding out all scorers in double-figures.

Virginia Union had five players in double-figures with Todd Hughes leading the way with 17 points in the effort.

Elizabeth City State will host Livingstone College Monday, Jan. 29 in the R. L. Vaughan Center. First game is slated for 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
