ETTRICK, Va. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team loss a heartbreaker to No. 8 Virginia State University, 67-64 in the VSU Multipurpose Center Wednesday evening.

With the loss, Elizabeth City State falls to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association; while VSU improves to 17-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

ECSU ended the first half shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 50 percent from behind the arc, and 62.5 percent from the candy stripe; while VSU shot 47.6 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from downtown, and 72.7 percent from the foul line.

The first half alone saw four ties and seven lead changes; while both teams recorded 12 points in the paint, ECSU led in points off turnovers with (12-0), second chance points (7-4), and fast break points (4-2). Elizabeth City State ignited an 11-5 run to close the half.

Freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs led the Vikings with 20 points; while sophomore forward John Maynor added 14 points and junior guard Corey Mendez recorded 10 in the effort.

Virginia State was led by Trey Brown with 15 points and 10 boards; while Cyonte Melvin scored 14 in the victory. The Vikings finished the game shooting 45.1 percent from the field, 45 percent from behind the arc, and 69.2 percent from the foul line; while the Trojans shot 45.5 percent from the floor, 41.7 percent from downtown, 75.9 percent from the foul line.

The teams are scheduled to travel to Virginia Union University Saturday, Jan. 27 in the VSU Multipurpose Center. First game is slated for 2:00 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 4:00 p.m.
