ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University men’s basketball team fell in double-overtime to Lincoln University (PA), 82-78 in the R. L. Vaughan Center Saturday afternoon. It’s ECSU’s (7-7; 1-4) second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern Division loss at home.

The Vikings went into the half up 36-32. ECSU shot 36 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from behind the arc, and 50 percent from the foul line during the second half; while the Lions (9-9, 4-4) shot 45.5 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the arc, and 58.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The game saw three lead changes with the score being tied six times during the second half. A back and forth contest going down the stretch, the Lions led by seven points with 3:32 remaining in regulation. Sophomore forward John Maynor knocked down a three pointer to cut the lead to four. LU’s Gevon Arrington layup was good with 2:50 remaining to raise the deficit back up to six.

With less than 1:25 remaining in regulation, freshman guard Zaccheus Hobbs knocked down two three pointers tying the game at 63-all to send the game into overtime. In overtime, the Lions outscored ECSU, 19-15 to close out the 82-78 contest.

For the game, the Vikings shot 37.5 percent from the floor, 32.4 percent from downtown, and 59.1 percent from the candy stripe; while LU shot 40 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from downtown, and 78.8 percent from the candy stripe.

Junior guard Shyheid Petteway led Elizabeth City State for the third straight game, tallying 15 points off 4-of-15 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 from behind the candy stripe and added four boards. Hobbs recorded 14 points; while freshman forward Shykeef Daniels recorded 14 points to round out the Viking scorers in double-figures.

Arrington led Lincoln with 25 points. Elijah Bush tallied 20 points; while Cameron Campbell added 13 points and Sean James recorded 12, rounding out all scorers in double-figures.

Both teams are scheduled to travel to Virginia State University Wednesday, Jan. 24 in the VSU Multipurpose Center. First game is slated for 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
