VIKINGS VICTORIOUS WITH 70-50 WIN OVER HOUSTON BAPTIST UNIVERSITY

DURHAM, NC-The Elizabeth City State University Vikings finished the year with a 70-50 win over Houston Baptist University at the 2007 B.C. Powder Classic hosted by North Carolina Central University. Brian West paced the Vikings with a career high 19 points, connecting in a game high four 3-pointers all of which came in the first half of play. ECSU improves to 6-3 overall while the Huskies, who defeated the host NCCU Eagles in day one's action, drop to 3-14 overall. No starter registered double figures for Houston Baptist however reserve guard Fred Hinnenkamp led all Huskies with a team high 11 points. ECSU jumped on the Huskies early, exploding out of the gates with a 15-0 lead to begin the game. A three-pointer by West with 1:11 remaining in the first half gave ECSU a 38-16 halftime lead, the largest margin of the first stanza. ECSU led by as much as twenty-five points in the second half before the Huskies mustered a 23-6 run to close the gap to eight points with 7:25 remaining. The Viking defense was stifling over the next four minutes of play as they held Houston Baptist scoreless while reeling off eight points to regain a double digit lead of 59-43 with 3:30 to go. ECSU also made the most of their time at the free throw line in the second half converting 21-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe. Olajuwon Johnson and Anthony Butler rounded out the double figure scorers for the Vikings with 12 and 10 points, respectively. West and Anthony Hilliard were named to the 2007 B.C. Powder All-Classic team along with Emanuel Willis of Houston Baptist, Charles Futrell of NCCU and Dannie Parker of Concord. The Vikings will return to action on January 8, 2008 as they open up the second half of the season with Shaw University at the R.L. Vaughan Center. Game time is slated for 7:30pm.
