RICHMOND, VA- Virginia Union University swept the season series over Elizabeth City State University, topping the Vikings 68-60 Wednesday evening at Barco-Stevens Hall.

The Vikings overcame a 12 point second half deficit to cut the lead to a basket, 58-56, with 4:20 remaining. However ECSU went cold, going 1-6 from the floor in the closing minutes. The Panthers only hit one field goal over the same span, but were able to stay ahead of ECSU at the free throw line, converting 10-12 shots to close out the game.

The two teams were knotted at 36 apiece at the intermission.

Despite holding their opponents to just 37% from the field, the Vikings lack of rebounding proved to be their un-doing in Wednesday's game. The Panthers held a 52-28 advantage on the boards including 23 offensive rebounds which led to a 19-5 edge in second chance points.

Rondy Tucker and Deon Rice paced ECSU with 17 and 14 points respectively, while Braxton Byerson led Virginia Union and all scorers with 20 points.

The Vikings (17-9, CIAA 11-7) have secured the third seed in the CIAA Northern Division and will await the final pairings for their opponent next Wednesday in the opening round of the 2011 CIAA Basketball Tournament. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit
