VIRGINIA UNION HOLDS OFF ECSU VIKINGS 69-63
Feb. 4, 2012
RICHMOND, VA- The Virginia Union University Panthers used a later three-pointer and free throws to hold off Elizabeth City State University 69-63 Saturday night at Barco-Stevens Hall.
In a second half that featured 10 lead changes, the Panthers got some cushion at the 2:07 mark when James Theus made his only shot of the night, a three pointer, to make the score 66-60. On the Vikings' next offensive trip Quintin Spady answered right back with his fourth three-pointer of the night to pull ECSU within a possession at 66-63.
A Panther turnover gave the Vikings two shots at the basket on their next offensive possession but both came up empty. VUU pushed their lead to five, 68-63 on two free throws by Theus with 1:05 left and added another shot from the charity stripe by Calvin Brown for the final point spread.
After Virginia Union opened the game on 50% shooting, including 6-10 from behind the three-point arc, the ECSU defense held the Panthers (who led 44-37 at halftime) to just 25 second half points. Although they gave up just two threes in the closing half, the Vikings were out hustled on the boards 25-14 which included nine offensive rebounds. For the game the Panthers out-rebounded ECSU 48-27.
The Vikings also shot a dismal 5-13 from the free throw line in the six point loss.
The Panthers' Calvin Brown and Angelo Sharpless tied with 19 points to lead their respective teams.
Virginia Union improves to 13-11 (CIAA 8-4) on the year with a 3-1 record in the CIAA North.
ECSU (10-11, CIAA 4-8) will return to action at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, February 7. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm. Visit www.ecsuvikings.com and follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings.
